Hilton Head Island Beaches are Public while Access is Often Private

And while the beaches are public, access to the beaches are mostly private  – reserved for the residents of Hilton Head Island plantations – the island still gives beach access for certain beaches. These include:

  • Alder Lane Beach Access that’s off South Forest Beach Drive
  • Chaplin Community Park that’s off William Hilton Parkway
  • Coligny Beach Park that’s off Coligny Circle
  • Driessen Beach Park located at the end of Bradley Beach Road
  • Fish Haul Beach Park that’s off Beach City Road
  • Folly Field Beach Park that’s off Folly Field Road
  • Historical Mitchelville Freedom Park that’s located at the end of Beach City Road
  • Islanders Beach Park that’s off Folly Field Road

Hilton Head Island Beaches are Wheelchair-Accessible 

They say disability is not inability. Hilton Head Island lives by this and has beaches that have been made accessible for wheelchair use. These beaches are:

  • Alder Lane Beach
  • Coligny Beach Park
  • Driessen Beach Park
  • Folly Field Beach Park
  • Islanders Beach Park

Hilton Head Island Beaches Have Designated Swimming Areas

With all the many beaches available it’s no brainer that the island has designated swimming areas. Besides, Hilton Head Island has its official beach season that starts from the 1st of April and goes all the way to the 30th of September of each year.

In the Alder, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Files and Islander beaches, the island has designated official swimming areas with the boundaries having been clearly marked both in the water and on the beach.

During the official beach season, the designated beaches have lifeguards available as well as in other beaches that are heavily populated to offer any information or assistance that might be needed. Additionally, whenever the yellow caution flag is up, visitors can inquire from the lifeguards before entering the water for safety purposes.

Hilton Head Island beaches abide by certain rules and regulations as well, and those found committing offenses can pay fines of up to $500 for each offense.

Parking and Facilities

While there are beaches with paid for parking, there are also those where parking is free. Coligny Beach Park, Fish Haul Beach Park, and Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park all have free parking. Additionally, all beach parks have free handicap parking.

There are 23, 54 and 13 metered spaces available at Alder Lane Beach, Folly Field Beach Park and Burkes Beach Road respectively. The metered spaces have a parking fee that’s a quarter for every fifteen minutes. Driessen Beach Park has 207 spaces that are available for long-term parking with the weekly fee being a quarter for every 30 minutes.
